Abstract

In this study, children’s books are examined in terms of the use illustrations and the cultural differences regarding these illustrations discussed. To this end, 22 children’s books that belong to twenty-two different countries are examined in terms of illustration techniques. A Book Pictures Checklist including 6 main items related to the books illustrations and prepared by the researchers themselves was used in this study. The sample of the study was determined through the method of maximum variety sampling which is one of the purposive sampling methods preferred in qualitative researches. The results indicated that the illustrations in the children’s book differ according to the socio-economic and educational characteristics of their communities in which they are published. However, although works from different cultures with different national, religious and social aspects are examined, some similarities and compliance are observed in the children’s book illustrations in the geographical regions close to each other. The illustrations of the children’s book gathered from former Soviet Union of Socialist countries include painting lines, fine lines and colored pencils while vibrant, creative and dynamic drawings together with a wealth of color and tone come to the front in the illustrations of European countries. Moreover, in Eastern countries, it is observed that the illustrations include more miniature elements. The illustrations in children’s books in Turkey show some similarities regarding character creation and illustration techniques with the Eastern and Western societies.
